Stochastic Optimal Growth When the Discount Rate Vanishes

It has been shown that long-run optimality of the limit of discounted optima when the discount rate vanishes is implied by a condition on the value function of the optimal program. We suggest a new method to verify this condition in the context of one-sector optimal growth. The idea should be more widely applicable.

Climate policies deserve a negative discount rate

Introduction Since the Stern Review (Stern 2007) and the debate it has sparked off, the discount rate has been at the center of heated discussions about climate policies. In the very long run, the discount rate makes a huge difference in the evaluation of policies. The following table (Table 1) shows the minimum return that a $1 investment for the future should have to be considered better than...

Optimal Inventory Policies when Purchase Price and Demand Are Stochastic

In this paper we consider the problem of a firm that faces a stochastic (Poisson) demand and must replenish from a market in which prices fluctuate, such as a commodity market. We describe the price evolution as a continuous stochastic process and we focus on commonly used processes suggested by the financial literature, such as the geometric Brownian motion and the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. ...

Asymptotic Behavior of a Stochastic Discount Rate

The mean discount rate for a simple stochastic model behaves asymptotically roughly like 1/ √ n in contrast to the usual geometric discounting in a deterministic model. AMS (2000) subject classifications. 60F99, 60J05, 60G42.
